What are App Store keywords?

Definition

App Store keywords are the search terms an app is indexed for. On iOS they come from the app name, subtitle and a hidden 100-character keyword field; Google Play has no keyword field and indexes the title and descriptions instead.

iOS: where keywords come from

Tips for the keyword field: separate terms with commas and no spaces, don't repeat words already in the name or subtitle, and use singular forms. Promotional text is not indexed for search.

Google Play: where keywords come from

There is no keyword field. Google indexes the title (30 characters), short description (80 characters) and full description (4,000 characters). Write naturally and mention important terms a few times — keyword stuffing is against Play policy.

Example

A budget app called "Pennywise – Budget Planner" uses its keyword field for "expense, tracker, money, saving, bills, finance, spending" — words not already in its name.
