Why app reviews matter
Reviews are one of the few places where users tell you, unprompted, what they think of your app. They affect three things at once:
- Downloads. People read reviews before they install. A page full of recent one-star complaints lowers the app store conversion rate.
- Visibility. Ratings and review volume are a signal in app store ranking and part of app store optimization.
- Product decisions. Reviews surface bugs, crashes and feature requests — often before your own analytics do.
Reviews vs. ratings
A rating is the 1–5 star score. A review is a rating plus text. Both stores let users rate without writing anything, so most apps have far more ratings than reviews.
Where reviews live
- Apple App Store: per country storefront, visible in App Store Connect.
- Google Play: in the Play Console, with ratings tailored to the user's country and device type.
Reading them in two consoles across dozens of countries is the reason teams use app review monitoring — for example App Store reviews in Slack.
Example
A two-star review in German saying "crashes on launch since the update" is a bug report, a support ticket and a ranking risk at the same time. Seeing it the same day lets you ship a fix and post a developer response.
