What is a soft launch for apps?

Definition

A soft launch is releasing an app in a few selected countries before the global launch, to test retention, monetization and stability with real users.

How it works

Instead of releasing worldwide, the app is published only in a handful of storefronts — often Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Nordics or the Philippines, which resemble bigger markets but cost less to advertise in. Both stores let you choose availability per country.

What teams measure

Soft launch vs. beta

A beta test uses invited testers and pre-release builds. A soft launch is a real, public release — just in fewer countries.

Example

A mobile game soft-launches in Canada and the Philippines for two months. Reviews reveal that the tutorial is too long; after shortening it, day-1 retention rises from 32% to 41% — and only then does the global launch happen.
